F1 Drivers' Helmets
DriversThere was a time when drivers used to plop a cloth hat or leather helmet on their heads and they were ready to go. During the fifties, it gradually began to dawn on them that such headgear was not going to help much in the event of an accident and hard helmets began to appear. Mike Hawthorn was one of the early adopters of this trend and he added a wide, clear visor that made him easy to identify from a distance.

Generally, however, the drivers did not make much of an effort to be recognizable in the cars; perhaps it was not so egotistical a sport in those days. In the sixties, more distinctive colors and schemes began to emerge, Stewart's tartan band making him instantly identifiable.
The personalization of helmets continued apace through the seventies and eighties and were a boon to sports commentators trying to keep pace with the race, especially after the car numbers were reduced to near invisibility. And then advertising came along to spoil the party.
Some helmets became so festooned with ads that it was impossible to see the complex design underneath. This has caused the present trend towards simple designs again and the task of identification becomes a lot easier as a result. Only last year, there were driver combinations that gave very little clue through helmet colors as to which driver you were watching. Speed looked very like Liuzzi (from one side, at least), Barrichello's and Button's red, white and blue could cause confusion, Sato and Davidson often suffered from the same problem.
2008 has seen a re-shuffle of drivers that has eased identification; the yellows of Massa, Hamilton and Rosberg are easy, as long as they stay in separate teams, ditto for the red and black of Raikkonen, Kovalainen and Alonso, Nakajima's red makes his Williams a cinch. We had better hope that Heidfeld and Vettel never wind up in the same team, however.
F1 Wolf has posted an excellent guide to the helmets that should help us all in staying ahead of the TV commentators this season. Have a look at it here - you might find a few that you weren't aware of yet. Piquet and Glock are included amongst the test drivers and Bourdais (that's his helmet in the picture above) hasn't made it yet, but I'm sure the Wolf will get around to an update soon. It must have taken a fair bit of work to track down some of the lesser know designs so I want to thank the Wolf for his efforts. Good on yer, mate!

That's one of the things I love about DC. Never changes his helmt design and is easily recognisable as a result.
couldhard changed his helmet
couldhard changed his helmet once last year, and i think to what was the absolute best looking helmet throughout the season, ive got a post about his tribute to colin mcrae here; http://f1bloggen.se/2007/09/27/bild-pa-coulthards-mcrae-hjalm-skadar-jag...

Much better looking in my opinion!
That's true, Daniel, and I
That's true, Daniel, and I remember him doing that. That's a very nice design, too, although not as instantly recognizable as his usual, I think.
Yes, Dank, I should have
Yes, Dank, I should have taken Alonso's helmet out of that trio. But now he looks like Bourdais instead!
websites
It is interesting to note that some drivers have their websites emblazoned across their helmets .... Alonso is a particular culprit. Drivers should be less self serving and remove it!

Thanks for that, Wolf - Google let me down by showing me the 2007 version! Interesting to see how some are changing their designs slightly, while others keep the same year after year. I would have thought it best to stick with your original so that you can always be easily identified.

I think some times the drivers have to follow the teams ... Look at Alonso last year and Heikki this year ... Now when Alonso is back to Renault he turned back to his previous design, well close to that :-)
Fisi, DC, Barrichello, Massa keep pretty much the same design anywhere they go
The Colin McRae helmet DC was sporting last year was great, pity it had to be to mark such a sad event
